SECTION 4: SUKHOTHAI
Sukhothai was the first capital of central Thailand. during the 13th and 14th centuries. Intercene conflict with the kingdoms of Ayutthaya and Chiengmai resulted in it's eventual absorption into the kingdom of Ayutthaya. The extensive remains of city moats and walls, palaces and monasteries attest to the former extent and prosperity of the city. Due to the fact that it was not sacked and burned by the Burmese , as Ayutthaya was, the ruins are often better preserved than those found in Ayutthaya.
