SECTION 3: AYUTTHAYA
Ayutthaya was the seat of government from the 14th until the late 18th centuries. The city fell to the Burmese in 1767 at which time it was sacked and burned. After 100 years of deterioration, the city was retaken from the jungle in the late 19th century. The existing ruins stand in mute testimony to the glory which once was considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
